Après des heures d'ardente conversation, la jeune femme, bien qu'épuisée, décide de rejoindre le sud de l'île, où elle réside. Une embardée précipite sa voiture dans un ravin : elle est tuée sur le coup.
L'office funèbre de la défunte sera célébré par un prêtre qui n'est autre que son oncle et parrain, lequel, pour faire rempart à son infinie tristesse, s'est promis de s'en tenir stric©tement aux règles édictées par la liturgie. Mais, dans la four©naise de la petite église, les images déferlent de toutes les mémoires, reconstituant la trajectoire de l'adolescente qui s'est rêvée en photographe, de la jeune fille qui, au milieu des années 1980, s'est jetée dans les bras d'un trop séduisant militant nationaliste avant de se résoudre à travailler pour un quotidien local où le 'reportage photographique' ne sem©blait obéir à d'autres fins que celles de perpétuer une collec©tivité insulaire mise à mal par les luttes sanglantes entre clans nationalistes.
C'est lasse de cette vie qu'Antonia, succombant à la tenta©tion de s'inventer une vocation, décide, en 1991, de partir pour l'ex-Yougoslavie, attirée, comme tant d'autres avant elle, dans le champ magnétique de la guerre, cet irreprésentable.
De l'échec de l'individu à l'examen douloureux des apories de toute représentation, Jérôme Ferrari explore, avec ce roman bouleversant d'humanité, les liens ambigus qu'entre©tiennent l'image, la photographie, le réel et la mort.
